One of the first Masai Mara safari camps to witness the wildebeest migration
SALA’S CAMP Sala’s Camp first hosted guests in 2004 and has become renowned for delivering an authentic Masai Mara safari experience with exceptional personalised service and fine dining. Seamlessly combining a traditional ‘under canvas’ safari experience with contemporary comfort, including private plunge pools and glass fronted tents, Sala’s Camp offers an unforgettable and magical Mara retreat. Owned and operated by The Safari Collection, it can be booked for the night or as part of a complete tailor-made safari. The magic of a Kenya safari doesn’t end with Sala’s Camp. The Safari Collection is the proud owner of four distinct lodges in some of Kenya’s most spectacular locations, including Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Solio Lodge in Laikipia, Sasaab in Samburu and Sala’s Camp in the Masai Mara.
Sala’s Camp is our Masai Mara lodge and nature lover’s paradise. The sights and sounds of the wild alongside a wonderful feeling of ‘being away from it all’ permeate this Masai Mara lodge. Guests find it easy to unwind in the tranquil atmosphere of understated safari elegance.
The main communal area of Sala’s Camp sits on the riverbank in the middle of camp, commanding spectacular south facing views over the Sand River and to the Tanzanian hills beyond. Here you’ll find an impressively large dining table cut from a single piece of fallen East African Rosewood found on Mount Kenya.
You’ll also find our ‘watering hole’ here, filled with a selection of teas, coffee, water, fruit juices and a fully stocked bar for you to help yourself to whenever you need a refreshment. Don’t miss our homemade sweet treats which are on offer here every day from 4:00 pm for you to refuel before heading out on your evening game drive. Various seating areas provide comfy spaces for relaxation, including a sunken deck around a firepit where you can discuss your sightings of the day with an evening drink. It’s here that you might meet our resident band of mongoose who love sunbathing on the deck or on the lawn behind it. We often use the lawn space for delicious barbeque nights where our chefs cook up a storm in our customised wildebeest shaped giant grill. A wooden veranda in front of the mess tent provides a peaceful al fresco dining space in which to enjoy our scrumptious cuisine whilst gazing out over the savannah.
Each en-suite tent in this Masai Mara Lodge is nestled amongst trees and greenery, spaced well apart along the river’s edge. There are two rooms to one side of the main mess tent which are reached via a small footbridge, whilst the other five tents are spread out in the opposite direction and reached via a winding gravel pathway. Each tent commands spectacular south-facing views which can be enjoyed from the private plunge pools and decks. The shady outside space in front of each tent is a lovely area for yoga, meditation, fitness, reading, sketching or simply relaxing in nature.
Our small gym and gift shop are located behind the main mess tent near to our manager’s office. If you’re interested in visiting our kitchen garden where all manner of ingredients are grown, simply ask one of our team and they’ll be happy to give you a tour.
Sala’s Camp, our Masai Mara tented camp can accommodate up to 18 guests in seven spacious tents. This includes two family suites and two secluded honeymoon tents. Sala’s Camp offers space, comfort and serene wilderness views as well as an amazing safari experience. When Sala’s Camp first opened as a permanent Masai Mara tented camp in 2006, guests slept in traditional mobile safari tents with bucket showers. A feeling of being totally immersed in nature was a real draw. In 2016 and again in 2017, all our rooms were refurbished to incorporate contemporary touches and elegant interiors. Retaining elements of an ‘under canvas’ mobile safari feel was essential and guests still enjoy a sense of being secluded in nature.
Today, all rooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, separate bathtubs, running water and flushing loos. Our electricity is solar powered with a standby generator for cloudier days. After exhilarating game drives, returning to the tranquillity of a private riverside deck and plunge pool is unbeatable. Our Masai Mara tented camp provides lots of lovely spots in which to curl up with a book, spot wildlife on the other side of the riverbank or simply contemplate the wonderful sights you’ve seen.
