Since late 2021, Kimondo has been superseded by our two much-loved tented migration camps: Ubuntu and Olakira. Similar to Kimondo, Ubuntu and Olakira each move during the year between two outstanding sites in the north and south of the Serengeti. This means that guests who choose Ubuntu or Olakira are likely to see the Great Migration herds regardless of when they visit. At the beginning of the year, the wildebeest gather to calve, which brings both an abundance of vulnerable young calves as well as dramatic scenes as big cats gather on the hunt.
Rooms
Our nine canvas tents, including one family tent, have king-sized or twin beds with cast-iron frames, handwoven rugs and wooden furnishings. There are en suite bathrooms with outdoor bucket showers, a flushing toilet and hot running water. The lounger on your veranda is the perfect spot for a post-lunch snooze.
As a migration camp, Kimondo moves with the seasons, following the wildebeest herds around the Serengeti. The camp is closed in November and through the rainy season from April to June. Northern Serengeti: July to October Over this key migration season, we’re in the north of the Serengeti to watch the wildebeest cross the Mara River from the Lamai Wedge. This crossing — when the wildebeest crash across the river where crocodiles lie in wait — is among the most famous natural events in the world and the focus of many National Geographic documentaries. Besides wildebeest, zebras and antelopes, you can also spot the predators who prey on these massive herds. Southern Serengeti: December to March As the wildebeest come back across the river from Kenya, we pack up and move to the lush grasslands in the south where animals gather to give birth and graze. You can often watch these mighty herds right from camp, as well as on game drives farther afield.
Family safaris Kimondo Migration Camp is a great choice for families with young children. We do not offer a specific programme for children, but welcome children over the age of 5. An extra bed can be added your tent or request our family tent. Please note that we recommend children under 12 shares with an adult. Ask your agent about booking a private vehicle for your family’s safari.
