This suite is styled with grace and brings out the memories of Adnan Abbas (nephew of Javed Jafferji) who enjoyed an impressive life in Karachi, Pakistan where he lived for over twenty years. Narrating the classic contemporary Pakistani style and elegance shines through ornamented gold and woodwork furniture. Javed sought to give this suite a unique sensation through photographs from the private collection of his visits to Pakistan.

Sayyida Salme was born on August 30, 1844, as the daughter of Sultan Said and Jilfidan. Her first years were spent in a seaside palace, about eight kilometres north of Stone Town (The palace was demolished in 1914). She grew up bilingual in Arabic and Swahili, and secretly taught herself to write, a skill that was unusual for women at the time. After her parents died, a dispute broke out between her brothers Majid and Barghash bin Said causing a rift within her family.

It is said that she sought comfort in the arms of Ruete, a German Christian merchant trader, to wash away her desperate loneliness. They fell in love while talking from their windows across each other’s homes. She fled to Germany, pregnant with Heinrich’s illegitimate child, fearing for her life. She then returned to Zanzibar for two brief visits in 1885 and 1888 attempting to reconcile with her family, both unsuccessful. From then on she lived in exile in Syria until 1914 and died in Germany in 1924.
